The final 2020 Kentucky Derby field and post positions are set, with 18 of the world’s best Thoroughbreds saddling up for a chance to take home the $1.86 million first-place prize.
After drawing Post 17, Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law’s opening 3-5 odds (-167) have the three-year-old bay colt as a massive favorite going into Saturday’s 146th running of the Kentucky Derby (7:01 PM EST, NBC).
That’s particularly relevant, as no horse in the history of the famous race at Churchill Downs has ever been fast enough out of Post 17 to actually win the Fastest Two Minutes in Sports.
Tiz the Law could break that law.
In an historic year for Triple Crown racing, more history could be made Saturday if Tiz the Law performs as expected and becomes the first horse in 42 tries to take the title from the unlucky slot.
While Tiz the Law, barring a late scratch, is the overwhelming favorite per the current Kentucky Derby odds, those odds may tighten or lengthen by race day.
Given that no horse is even running a close second on the current horse futures boards at the top online racebooks, there’s no telling which way those lines will shift.
Fortunately, if you wager with an international racebook, you can lock in every bet. These futures are house-banked, not pari-mutuel, so if you think Tiz the Law will only increase his lead, you should wager now to get the best possible payout.
Naturally, the same goes for any other horse in the field.
The following odds are from the three most popular online horse betting sites, with post positions listed in parentheses.

As you can see, depending on the racebook you choose, you’ll get slightly different odds on various horses in contention, and some longshots pay out considerably better at some books than others.
Right now, if you’re high on the horse with Tiz the Law, you’ll want to bet on him at BetOnline. However, if you think Honor A. P. will sprint down the stretch for the upset, you should bet on his odds at Bovada or MyBookie, where you’ll get 50 more points on a winning wager.
Each of the above sites offers more than just outright winner odds. They’ve also got Place and Show lines plus dozens of Kentucky Derby prop bets.
You can even place exotics like exactas, trifectas, superfectas, and more, locking in your potential payouts by wagering now with these online books.
At tracks or sites offering typical pari-mutuel odds, you won’t be able to know exactly what you stand to win on a given bet until all betting is closed and the race is about to start.
While Kentucky Derby betting action promises to turn a big handle despite the disrupted 2020 horse racing schedule, if Tiz the Law wins as expected, you can expect even more wagers to be placed on his chances to win the Triple Crown.
With a Derby win, Tiz the Law would be an enormous favorite for the 2020 Preakness Stakes on October 3, where he could become the 14th ever Triple Crown winner.
Those come in bunches, remember, and there have been two such champions in the last five years (American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018).
While records are made to be broken – and Tiz the Law could well set one by winning out of Post 17 on Saturday – there’s one that’s definitely not falling this year.
If you want to put some money on the single sure thing in the 2020 Derby, we advise taking the “No” on this prop from MyBookie:
Will Secretariat’s record of 1:59.40 be broken in the 2020 Kentucky Derby?
- No -4500
- Yes +1500
Both Bovada and BetOnline have this same prop on offer, but the “No” lines there are posted at -10000 and -5000, respectively. Given the maximum wagering limits on this bet, you won’t win a great deal of cash, but Secretariat’s record is going nowhere fast.
For everything else, everything’s in play.
After all, online Kentucky Derby betting Tiz the Law of the land!
