Missouri Casino Project Backers Seek To Be Included On Statewide Ballot

Missouri State FlagA group of casino entrepreneurs hopes to get their initiative on the November ballot, but the secretary of state’s office has denied their request.

Undeterred by the state’s secretary’s office ruling, the Osage River Gaming & Convention Committee is in the process of appealing. Despite the setback of being short about 2,000 signatures, the group remains resolute. They had successfully collected enough signatures in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th districts, and are now focused on verifying signatures for the 2nd district.

The group of investors told the courts that they verified more than 2,500 valid signatures that were rejected in the 2nd district and should be counted. Officials representing the group told the media that they obtained enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot, but due to the 2nd district error, they need a judge to override the previous ruling.

The proposed amendment to the Missouri constitution, if passed, would open up new possibilities for the state’s casino industry. It would allow casinos to be established along the Osage River, a significant expansion from the current restriction to the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. However, this change would require the override of a state law that permits only 13 casino licenses.

Casino gambling in Missouri is limited to floating facilities and is currently only permitted on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Missouri has approved numerous table games, including blackjack, roulette, and poker.
