Potential Tua Tagovailoa Replacements For The Miami Dolphins

Oft-concussed Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has now been placed on injured reserve, putting the rest of his season and perhaps his career in doubt.

Tagovailoa has announced his intention to continue playing, but his timetable for return in 2024-25 is unknown. Online NFL sportsbooks believe Tua and have created odds that negate any potential for an in-season retirement.

Will Tua Tagovailoa Retire Before the 2024-25 Season Ends?

Will He Retire Before September 30th 2024?

For now, the Dolphins will rely on Skylar Thompson, a third-year quarterback who has performed modestly during his limited action.

Tyler Hunter will back up Thompson. With a loaded offense that features Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and DeVon Achane, Miami can ill-afford to waste a season with a mediocre QB under center.

Quarterbacks The Dolphins Should Trade For

Bryce Young – Carolina Panthers

The first overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft has been benched in favor of Andy Dalton after 18 starts and only two wins to show for it. Now that the Panthers have thrown in the towel, his services can likely be acquired for a late-round draft pick.

What’s intriguing about Young and Miami is that he is a good fit for their offensive scheme. Adding Bryce to the roster may be more of a financial commitment than the Dolphins are willing to make unless coach McDaniels is already high on him.

There are NFL prop bets available that suggest Young will remain in Carolina at least through next season.

Where will Bryce Young Play Game 1 of the 2025-2026 NFL Season

  • Carolina Panthers -1000
  • New York Giants +900
  • Miami Dolphins +900
  • Las Vegas Raiders +900
  • Pittsburgh Steelers +1400
  • Tennessee Titans +1400
  • Los Angeles Rams +1400

Russell Wilson – Pittsburgh Steelers

Wilson was named the starter heading into the 2024-25 season for the Steelers but was a scratch for Week 1 with a calf injury. Justin Fields has led Pittsburgh to a 2-0 start after a forgettable preseason, leaving Wilson as a potentially expendable option in western PA.

Depending on what Miami would have to send to Pittsburgh to acquire Wilson, he may be worth the asking price to salvage this season.

Quarterbacks The Dolphins Should Sign In Free Agency

Ryan Tannehill – Free Agent

Although Tannehill would require a sizable price tag, no other quarterback on the market would be more comfortable in South Beach. He had a lot of success in Miami during his time there but was never surrounded by offensive weapons like Achane, Hill, and Waddle.

He could serve as a solid plug-in-play and offer a similar parachute to what Joe Flacco provided the Cleveland Browns last year.
